Talcher coalfields paralysed

TALCHER: The strike by the drivers and helpers of private transport companies at Talcher Coalfields from last evening paralysed work in all the seven open cast mines. The total loss of production by Saturday evening was stated to be more than two lakh tones, MCL official sources said.

The drivers stopped work seeking fulfilment of their three-point charter of demands, including employment of operators of their union in the vehicles engaged in Bhubaneswari mine. MCL authorities have been refusing deployment of outside operators other than those of the company.

Meanwhile, local police have deployed four platoons of police which helped the management-run four of the seven mines, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer BB Sahu. Despite police efforts these mines are yet to operate to full capacity for want of drivers.

There are about 5,000 drivers and helpers working for private transporters who carry out coal production and transportation works in the mines.
