Mobile number portability launched by PM.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday launched the nationwide Mobile Number Portability at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, a move that would empower mobile subscribers to change their operator while retaining their mobile number and force telecom operators to improve their services.

If you are unhappy with your service provider's tariff plan, call drops or signal strength, but have tolerated it all just because you want to retain your number, you don't have to wait much longer now.

How can you take advantage of Number Portability?

- Subscribers can contact the new service provider they want to opt and get customer acquisition form and porting form from them. - If you fulfil the eligibility norms, you will then obtain a 'unique porting code' by sending an SMS from the mobile number you want to port to 1900 with text 'PORT' followed by your 10 digit mobile number you want to port. - Then provide duly filled porting and customer acquisition form along with requisite documentary proof to the service provider. - Post paid subscribers are also expected to submit a copy of their last bill along with the form.- You have the option of withdrawing your porting request within 24 hours of applying.- You will be charged only Rs 19 for using this service.
